Psalm 1

The writer of Psalm 1 tell us that blessed is the man or women who delights in God’s Word and not in the cynism or foolishness of the world. We live in a social media world that is full people giving their opinions and thoughts on every possible subject. And those opinions are often filled with bitterness, anger, arrogance, pride and cynism. And many times there is a hollowness to their counsel as it is often rooted in the wisdom of this world And we can find ourselves lured into these debates that never seemed to be resolved just leaving us cynical, angry, unsatisfied and discouraged.

But Psalm 1 tells us that our hearts and mind should be filled with the truths and wisdom of the word of God. It is through His counsel that we find joy and hope and satisfaction. This psalm says the person who delights in God’s word is like a healthy, fruit-bearing tree. This tree represents one who is growing spiritually and producing the spiritual fruit in our lives we were created to produce. It represents the kind of abundant and joyful life that we made to enjoy in Christ.

What consumes more of your time and heart? The wisdom of this world or the wisdom of God. May we spend our days transforming our minds with truth and encouragement of God’s Word. Make it a daily habit to meditate on Scripture, memorize Scripture, pray through Scripture. Let His word be what leads us, guides us, counsels us, convicts us, shapes us and encourages us. The wisdom of the world will simply leave us empty, cynical and defeated but the wisdom of God will give us hope, strength and life.
