Music Director

First Christian Church of Alexandria Director of Music

The Director of Music will partner with the pastor, the pianist, volunteer singers, volunteer musicians, and the worship team to provide music for a blended, creative, progressive worship service.

Ideal Qualifications:
• Has experience with Christian hymns and songs and their selection for worship services.
• Is a skilled musician who reads music and is able to provide vocal leadership for a worship service (traditional and contemporary hymns and songs).
• Able to direct and work with musicians, vocal choir, and bell choir.
• Good communication skills (written and oral), good people skills, and teamwork skills.
• Has basic knowledge of technology for both in-person and virtual worship experiences.
• Ability to fill-in as worship pianist when needed is a plus.

Main Responsibilities:
• Work with pastor and Worship Team to choose weekly music and develop creative, inspirational worship services.
• Coordinate weekly special music (soloists, small groups, dance, choir, bell choir).
• Lead singing at 11 am Sunday worship service and any special services.
• Direct a vocal choir (and possibly a bell choir) to perform monthly or seasonally.
• Conduct rehearsals for vocal and bell choirs as interest and demand occur.
• Help plan and lead special services (Christmas Eve, Easter, etc.).
• Work closely with the technology team regarding all audio and visual needs.
• Encourage the development of spiritual, musical, artistic, and technical gifts of others.
• Submit regular articles for newsletter.
• Maintain the church’s music library and copyright usage of music.
• Participate in quarterly planning meeting with Worship Team and pastor.
• Play or lead music, if available, for funerals, memorial services, and weddings (compensation will be additional and come from families).

Time and Pay:
The Director of Music position is part-time, approximately 6-8 hours weekly, including:
• 9:30-12 on Sunday mornings, and the remainder can be remote and flexible through the week.
• In-person responsibilities can fluctuate during different church seasons (i.e., Easter, Christmas, etc.)
• Salary starts at $9,000 per year, based on skills and experience.
• Salary and time off will be negotiated at the time of appointment.
